Singapore’s Senta is a young dramatic soprano from Australia – Kathleen Parker. Captivating the judges and audiences equally at the finals of the 2015 International Singing Competition for Wagner Voices, Kathleen won both the Wolfgang Wagner Prize as well as the Audience Prize.
Kathleen says: “When I was approached by the Richard Wagner Association (Singapore) to discuss the possibility of being part of this production, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Senta is one of my favourite roles to sing: “The Flying Dutchman” is a gripping opera from start to finish, with glorious music and a story that lends itself to so many wonderful staging and design possibilities!
I was intrigued, too, at the blending of elements of shadow puppetry and Chinese opera into the production: it has the potential to be very evocative and completely innovative!
Finally, there’s the chance to work in and get to know Singapore: a fascinating and vibrant place. This production is going to be an adventurous world first for Asia, for opera and for Wagner enthusiasts. I’m very excited to be part of it.”
Kathleen completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Queensland and graduated from the Australian Opera Studio in Perth, Western Australia with Honors and the Dux Prize in 2008. In 2009, she won the Opera Foundation of Australia Audi German Australia Opera Competition and joined the ensemble at Opera Cologne for the 2009/2010 season. She was then invited back to Opera Cologne as a guest in several roles during the following season. Since 2011, Kathleen has also performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Theater Nordhausen and Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, as well as in concerts and recitals throughout Germany.
Kathleen was the recipient of the Ethel Osborn Prize in Voice and the South Queensland Performing Arts Challenge in 2009. She was a finalist in the 2011 Concours International de Chant in Marmande and the 2011 Concours de Geneve.
