——————————————————————————

“The Flying Dutchman in the Community” outreach programme kicked off on 10 June at ION Art Gallery with “The Flying Dutchman” Sneak Peek which also served as a media event marking the launch of ticket sales and a show & tell of the progress in the opera for donors and supporters.

This was followed in late June by our “A Kid’s Introduction to the World of Opera” workshop at Toa Payoh SAFRA Club conducted by Candice de Rozario who sings the role of Mary in “The Flying Dutchman” opera.

On 11 August, Juliana Lim President, Richard Wagner Association (Singapore) will speak to students of Republic Polytechnic on the topic “Arts Administration: Work or Play?” drawing from her 20-year career as an arts manager and her more recent experience as an arts volunteer, in helping to spearhead “The Flying Dutchman” opera project.

The highlight of “The Flying Dutchman in the Community” outreach programme will be our Wagner Weekend at library@esplanade on the weekend of 21-22 August. Apart from the screening of Wagner operas and an exhibition of related books, Director Glen Goei will share his and his co-director Chong Tze Chien’s vision for the Singapore-made “The Flying Dutchman” and his experience of becoming an opera director “From the Wagnerian Couch” conducted by Wagnerian / retired psychiatrist Dr Ong Yong Lock. Other Wagnerians – John Gee, Natalie Ng and Dr. Katherine Wallace from the Richard Wagner Asssociation (Singapore) will also speak about the genesis of “The Flying Dutchman” and the influence of Wagner on popular culture.

Another “Kid’s Introduction to the World of Opera” workshop was conducted by Candice de Rozario on 8 Sept at SAFRA Toa Payoh.

Other outreach events are being planned.
