Richard Wagner Association (Singapore)



RWAS_LogoThe Richard Wagner Association (Singapore) [RWA(S)] is a regional branch of the International Association of the Wagner Societies (“Richard-Wagner-Verband International e.V.”), headquartered in Bayreuth, Germany. Our purpose is to create interest in and deepen the understanding of Richard Wagner’s musical works in Singapore. In addition we want to promote collaboration among Wagner associations and related societies in the region and across international boundaries.

The RWA(S) regularly hosts local events, and supports regional and international concerts and festivals, including the Bayreuth festival.  RWA(S) is managed by volunteers and the 2016/17 Management Committee comprises the following volunteers: President : Juliana Lim, Vice-President: Dr. Ronald Ling, Secretary: Natalie Ng, Treasurer : Karl-Heinz Jung,  Management Committee Members: Dr. Katherine Wallace, Dr. Ong Yong Lock, Honorary Auditors: John Gee and Dr. Pete Kellock.

“RWA(S), together with co-producers OperaViva Limited and The Finger Players have embarked on “The Flying Dutchman” opera project, tomake a difference by:

  • Enriching our already rich arts palette and introducing to Singaporeans a masterpiece by one of the (if not the) most important opera composers of all time. Wagner stands tall above the other composers as he originated the idea of “gesemkunstwerk”, the total work of art. He wrote both the music and the librettos for his operas, he specified his stage directions and stage design;
  • Nurturing a pool of opera artists – directors, singers, choristers, musicians and repetiturs;
  • Shouting out that “Opera is accessible” and “Wagner is tuneful” in the way we style the production and through English & Mandarin surtitles, a marketing campaign and, “The Flying Dutchman in the Community” outreach programme including a Wagner Weekend at library esplanade, talks in schools and community centres and events that at shopping malls….”
